If you are someone who avoids noise, tippy-toes through the house, and turns off every background sound to find peace like I do, then heavy rhythm probably sounds like a nightmare.
We default to quiet when a child is overwhelmed, but soft quiet actually accentuates internal noise and background static— giving every tiny, jarring sound space to break through.
A deep Taiko strikes does the exact opposite: it drowns out the static. Instead of forcing an overstimulated toddler to sit in a quiet room with their own racing energy, the drum completely commands the space, gives them one single beat to lock onto, and finally gives that built-up energy a place to go.
"Quiet escapes the noise—
rhythm anchors it."
Taiko (Big Drum) for Toddlers.
At Lima Charlie, we step back before we step in. The last thing an overwhelmed child needs is more—more requests, more noise, more kinesthetic energy buzzing around them.
We come in and help them through sensory deprivation to calm the storm. We show them how to breathe, locate and ground themselves in the sensory assault of chaos and overwhelm. Together we take control over what we can control, we deploy our protocols and take every opportunity to practice in making it a natural and automatic response, so when they feel themselves slipping, they can pull themselves out of the darkness.

When they are ready, we help them shake out the physical tension that resides in their muscles, chest, hands and face, dispose of the excess anxious energy and help them return to a kinder state.

The goal is never to fix, change or force anyone into a completely different shape. It's about clearing away the chaotic noise to reveal the strong resilient foundation that was there all along.

The overwhelm storms inside them. They can't make it stop and they can't leave. They are tired and distressed, thrashing to survive but the waves keep roaring;
and it’s so hard to breathe let alone function.
